Rachel Laurence - The Key to the Garden

Doors Open: 7.30pm   Event Begins: 8pm   Event Ends: 10pm

Rachel Laurence
Rachel Laurence
Once upon a time a little girl from Salford opened the door to an abandoned garden. Fifty years later she captured that magical moment in 'The Secret Garden'. Francis Hodgson Burnett (1824-1924) was a bestselling writer, international celebrity and fiercely independent woman, most famous in her lifetime as the author of 'Little Lord Fauntleroy'. But it is 'The Secret Garden, that has ensured her immortality , and a place in the hearts of generations of readers - the tale of a little girl for whom happiness blossoms in a neglected garden. 'The Key to The Garden' is a funny, fast moving and vibrant production in which actress and writer Rachel Laurence tells the fascinating magical, sometimes tragic and ultimately uplifting story of a vivacious dedicated and romantic writer. Frances Hodgson Burnett's astounding talent and energy led her from industrial Lancashire, via rural Tennessee, to the highest rank of Washington society - yet she took a lifetime to find peace in her own Secret Garden. 'The Key to the Garden' is produced by Hunt and Laurence and directed by Sandra Hunt. A beautiful story, engagingly told by Rachel's witty text and sensitive, moving performance.... thank you for bringing such a great show to us! Theatre by the Lake, Keswick

Featuring:
Rachel Laurence - Rachel Laurence has worked extensively on stage and screen, appearing recently as the music hall comedienne Jessie in “Feed” at the Oldham Coliseum. Other favourite roles have included Cecily in “The Importance of Being Earnest’, Liz in “Billy Liar” and, for American TV, Cynthia Lennon in “John and Yoko, a Love Story”. Other TV work includes “GBH”, ‘Heartbeat”, “A Very British Coup”, “Tales of the Unexpected”, “Coronation Street”, “Grange Hill”, “Doctors”, “Eastenders” and “Cold Feet”. Films include “Business as Usual”. “A Day in Summer” and “Gunpowder”. Billy Mitchell & Bob Fox

Doors Open: 7.30pm   Event Begins: 8pm   Event Ends: 11pm

Billy Mitchell & Bob Foxx
Billy Mitchell & Bob Foxx
This coming together of two great artists is bound to entertain audiences who love folk, the north, geordies and a good banter in addition to spending the evening in close quarters with two very charismatic gentlemen! Their wonderful selection of northern songs spans Jimmy Nail’s ‘Big River’ to Lindisfarne’s ‘Meet Me On The Corner’ all delivered with consummate musicianship. The duo’s on-stage banter has also been known to regularly reduce audiences to gibbering wrecks.

Featuring:
Billy Mitchell & Bob Foxx - Billy started playing the guitar in the early sixties when they were all made of wood and mostly the same colour. He formed a ‘beat group’ with some pals at the local youth club and played local clubs and pubs till the sad arrival of full time employment forced their demise. He then joined with former beat group pals to form a ‘folk group’ during the great ‘folk scare’ of the late sixties and early seventies. The Callies showed the good people of Newcastle what they thought folk music should sound like. They recorded one album, went to London, didn’t like it... then came home. After a spell in Vancouver, Canada, Billy was invited to return to England to join Jack the Lad with members of the recently split Lindisfarne. Then followed four albums and four years touring the UK and Europe, playing every venue known to man and some that weren’t… At the end of the seventies he joined with Peter McIntyre to form the hilarious Maxie & Mitch who have spent the last twenty four years playing music in a very funny way to people all over the world who fancied a laugh… 1996 saw Billy join Newcastles’ favourite sons Lindisfarne who enjoyed critical acclaim for their live concerts in the UK and the USA, and their subsequently-released albums of new songs Here Comes the Neighbourhood and Promenade. Since Lindisfarne's retirement in 2003, Billy has embarked on a very successful solo career with his Backtrackin' show and CD, and in 2005 he recorded The Devil's Ground album, which received critical acclaim and extensive radio play. In 2006, he celebrated his 60th birthday by forming the first ever Billy Mitchell Band, who played an emotional ‘sell out’ concert at The Sage, Gateshead. Billy has recently dipped back into his ‘folk roots’ by collaborating with Bob Fox on two UK tours and a highly acclaimed ‘live’ album Five-star B&B.

Fast Woman (performed by) Sandra Hunt

Doors Open: 7.30pm   Event Begins: 8pm   Event Ends: 10.30pm

Fast Woman
Fast Woman
Performed by Sandra Hunt Written by Stewart Howson     Directed by Fine Time Fontayne Daredevil Helle Nice was a fast woman in every sense: in life, in love and in motor-racing.  Roaring through the 1920’s she danced her way to notoriety at the Casino de Paris, posed nude for Parisian photographers and risked her life many times in adventures as diverse as skiing, high wire acts, mountaineering and speed record attempts.  Her skill and courage brought her success; her brazen media-savvy brought her enemies – one in particular.  In him she met her match.  Hunt and Laurence presents the extraordinary life of Helle Nice, artists’ model, dancer and champion racing driver.  She went from the dreariness of peasant France to the demi-monde of 20’s Paris to the death defying racing circuits of Europe and America.  She was sultry, sexy, dancing half naked; she was gritty, driven, taking the chequered flag ahead of the pack. A media darling, a practiced self-publicist, her world crashed with an accusation of ‘Nazi collaborator’.  A jealous male or a kernel of truth?

Featuring:
Fast Woman (performed By Sandra Hunt) - Sandra Hunt, like Helle Nice, began her career as a dancer performing in cabaret and nightclubs as well as theatres. Sandra says “I have also modelled for my local art group but appeared nude only in the privacy of my own bathroom! Her television work includes roles in ‘Cold Feet’, ‘The Street’, ‘Coronation Street’, ‘Emmerdale’, ‘Heartbeat’, ‘Where The Heart Is’ and ‘Doctors’. And highlights in a long theatrical career are her remarkable performance as Fanny Cradock in her solo show ‘Fanny Cradock - the Life and Loves of a Kitchen Devil’ written by Julia Darling, Mary Granard in the hilarious ‘Lady Molly of Scotland Yard’ and half of the ladies in the moving and delicately funny ‘The Ladies of Cranford’ both adapted by and performed with Rachel Laurence. http://web.me.com/robertslaurence/HuntLaurence/Welcome.html

Rachel Harrington and Rod Clements

Doors Open: 7.30pm   Event Begins: 8pm   Event Ends: 11pm

Rachel Harrington
Rachel Harrington
Seattle country-soul sensation Rachel Harrington is the rising star of Americana, who is keeping the ancient art of the musical storyteller alive. The source of her inspiration comes from her early life in a strict Pentecostal family in Oregon & her musical influences, including gospel music & her father’s secret soul record collection, which she would listen to when the family were out at church. Rachel will be accompanied by the inimitable Rod Clements, solo singer-songwriter and master slide guitarist and Bert Jansch collaborator and producer, dobro guru and Lindisfarne founder member whose illustrious credentials read like a who’s who of the folk-roots world.

Featuring:
Rachel Harrington - Rachel Harrington comes from a Pentecostal upbringing in the state of Oregon; country, to be sure, but listening to her you'd think it was Appalachia in 1934, so convincing is her traditional song writing and her plaintive singing. This is not an affectation, it shows, as in Cormac McCarthy's novels, how close the past is to the present out in the country. In Rachel's songs the story comes first, but the music isn't far behind with her lovely voice and the stellar cast of musicians that accompany her on her just released second album, City of Refuge
